In the fifth paragraph of this passage,the author use extremely offensive and obscene words to summarize his feelings towards Asian values,such as damn filial piety,damn grade grubbing and damn humility and hard work. As an Asian American,his attitude and opinions were influenced by the social environment of the United States to some extent.He shows total rejection and condemnation to these Asian values.
As far as I’m concerned,I think his judgments toward Asian values are imbalanced and immature. There are both merits and demerits in Asian values. We should treat it dialectically.On the one hand,Asians advocate filial piety.I thinks this value brings great benefit to the social development.In Asian area,filial piety is kind of traditional culture and basic ethical norms,which is followed by Asians for thousands years.Filial piety requires people to respect and concern the elders.It is conducive to the integration of intergenerational relations and the establishment of harmonious family.It helps us to create amicable social atomosphere.In addition,other values such as humility and hard work have contributed greatly to social stability.We should insist on advocating these values.On the other hand,some values like deference to authority and striving middle-class servility exist flaw.These values guide people to keep absolute obedience to the political power and privilege ,which stifles Asians’ pursuit for democracy and freedom in a sense.Besides,it aggravates the division of social class and cause inequality in human rights.
All of the above indicate that there exists both merits and demerits in Asian values.We should judge them dialectically.
